Where to Dine on Samos

Nestled in the azure embrace of the Aegean Sea, the Greek island of Samos is not just a haven for sun-seekers and history buffs but also a paradise for food enthusiasts.
The island’s cuisine, a delightful tapestry woven from the threads of ancient traditions and local ingredients, offers an authentic taste of the Aegean.

Samos’ culinary landscape is as varied as its picturesque terrain. The island’s fertile valleys and abundant seas provide a cornucopia of fresh produce and seafood, forming the backbone of its gastronomic offerings. The local cuisine, deeply rooted in Greek traditions, is characterized by its simplicity, the richness of flavors, and the use of fresh, locally-sourced ingredients.

A quintessential Samian experience begins with ‘Mezedes,’ small plates of appetizers, often accompanied by the island’s famous Muscat wine. Indulge in a platter of ‘Octapodi’ (octopus) grilled to smoky perfection, ‘Dolmadakia’ (stuffed grape leaves), or ‘Fava,’ a creamy spread made from yellow split peas.
These dishes, bursting with flavors, set the stage for what’s to come. No culinary tour of Samos is complete without savoring its seafood.

The island’s coastal waters teem with a variety of fish, making seafood a staple in the local diet. ‘Atherina’ (fried smelts) and ‘Kalamarakia’ (fried squid) are local favorites, often served with a squeeze of lemon to enhance their fresh taste.
Samos also prides itself on its unique cheeses, especially the renowned ‘Samos Feta,’ which is more creamy and less salty than its mainland counterpart. ‘Mizithra,’ a soft, sweet cheese, is another local delicacy, often used in pastries or served with honey as a dessert. Speaking of sweets, Samos satisfies the sweet tooth with traditional desserts like ‘Loukoumades’ (honey puffs) and ‘Samian Bourekia,’ a cheese-filled pastry that is a testament to the island’s culinary dexterity.
But the true gem of Samos is its world-renowned Muscat wine. This sweet, amber-hued nectar, made from the Muscat grapes grown in the island’s volcanic soil, is a perfect accompaniment to any meal or a delightful way to conclude a gastronomic journey.

Dining in Samos is not just about the food; it’s an immersive experience that involves all the senses. The warm hospitality of the Samians, combined with the stunning backdrop of the island – from its tranquil beaches to its lush mountains – makes eating and drinking here an unforgettable experience.

Tips

Here are some recommendations for your culinary journey to Samos:

Triantaphyllos

Located in Paleokastro up in the hills above Vathi, this seems to be an unlikely hotel to find a great – possibly the best – fish restaurant on Samos but here you are. Triantaphyllos provides you with the freshest local catch in a rustic environment and at rock solid prices. Try the Tuna fillet, the sword fish or the house salad – a culinary adventure in itself. Guests of our Luxury Mansion in Paleokastro can easily walk there!

Zakore

Run by the son of the local butcher, the Zakore has gained a reputation as being the place for meat lovers. That doesn’t mean vegetarians go home hungry – they offer wonderful homecooked stews and Samian specialities that you won’t find anywhere else on Samos at this quality. Try the Tagliata – sliced grilled beef with parmesan cheese. Zakore is located in Kokkari right on the waterfront opposite the Wave bar.

Aiolos

This is another restaurant famous for its fresh fish – and here you sit right on the waterfront.
It’s one of these places where you pick the fish of your choice yourself. The atmosphere is authentic, prices are moderate and quality is fantastic, that’s why it is equally famous with tourists and locals. Don’t go there too late to make sure there is enough fish left – mind you, it’s fresh!
Aiolos is located at the small fishing harbour of Agios Konstantinos.
If you happen to stay in our fabulous spacious villa this might easily become your second home!
